Mike Gravel served as a U.S. senator from Alaska from 1969 to 1981. He previously served in the Alaska House of Representatives. He graduated from Columbia University. He was born in Springfield, Mass. in 1930. He and his wife Whitney have two children. Gravel was a Democratic candidate for president until March 2008 when he joined the Libertarian party to pursue its nomination for president.
